is a Senior Scholar (Directeur de Recherche) at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (Maison de l'Archéologie et de l'Ethnologie, Nanterre). He was awarded a PhD in 1976 by the Univesity of Paris I-La Sorbonne after having successfully defended his thesis on Contribution à l'étude de l'urbanisation en Palestine à l'âge du Bronze ancien. He is currently the Director of the Tell Yarmouth Excavations (Israel, since 1980), co-Director of the Hartouv excavations (Israel, since 1985) and co-Director of the Tell-es-Sakan franco-palestinian Excavations (Palestine, since 1999). His fields of interest include urbanization processes and the formations of the first states, as well as the exchanges and Egyptian colonial expansion into Palestine in the Early Bronze Age. He is the co-editor (together with A. Maeir) of :"I will speak the riddles of ancient times" (Ps 78:2b): Archaeological and Historical Studies in Honor of Amihai Mazar on the Occasion of his Sixtieth Birthday.
